About Us

A family business built on doing things properly.

CanDo Payments started because Gary got ripped off. His bank set him up with a processor that overcharged him for five years — and when he found out, no one picked up the phone. He decided to build a company that would never do that to anyone. 100s of businesses later, we're still doing exactly that.

Our Story

It started with a phone call that never got answered

Gary ran a business for years. His bank set him up with Global Payments for card processing — and he trusted them, because why wouldn't you trust your bank? It was only when someone asked him to compare rates that he discovered he'd been paying three times the going rate. For over five years.

The customer service was almost non-existent. Non-personal, impossible to reach. That frustration drove him to learn everything about payments — and when life threw him a curveball with a serious spinal injury, he channelled his recovery into building something better.

CanDo Payments was born from a simple idea: business owners deserve a provider that's honest about pricing, picks up the phone, and genuinely cares whether your business succeeds. That's still what drives us today.

Where it all began

After a series of spinal surgeries that changed Gary's life, he decided to channel his frustration into something positive. Having discovered his previous payment provider had been overcharging him three times the going rate for over five years, Gary started CanDo Payments as a sideline from home — determined to make sure no other business owner got taken for a ride.

Finding our feet

What started as a one-man mission quickly found traction. Word spread among local businesses that someone was actually offering transparent pricing and picking up the phone. CanDo grew steadily, proving that honest advice and fair deals were exactly what UK merchants were looking for.

2020

Navigating the storm

Covid hit — and hit hard. But while other providers disappeared behind automated phone menus, Gary doubled down on being there for his clients. Businesses needed support more than ever, and CanDo showed up. Every call answered, every question resolved, every merchant supported through the toughest year in a generation.

Sam joins the mission

Sam Cameron, who'd built a career in the NHS as an Occupational Therapist, saw the business growing and made a bold decision. Better quality of life, better work-life balance, and a chance to build something together as a family. She left the NHS and joined CanDo — bringing operational expertise and a people-first mindset that transformed how the company ran.

Partnering with Elavon

CanDo partnered with Elavon — the merchant services arm of U.S. Bank and one of the largest payment processors in the world. The same infrastructure trusted by Virgin Atlantic, IKEA, and Hilton was now behind every CanDo transaction. Enterprise-grade reliability. Family business values.

The team grows up

The partner programme launched, the operations team expanded, and CanDo supported hundreds more businesses with their payments. The company committed to a new five-year home at The Technology Centre and was recognised as one of the UK's Top 100 Small Businesses of the Year.

2024

Working with even more businesses

CanDo continued expanding its online portfolio while supporting even more UK businesses with payments. The company was nominated for the Family Business Digital Innovation Award, shortlisted by the Chamber of Commerce, and signed a world-famous tourist venue in Liverpool. Bailey the French Bulldog still mostly naps, but the team swears she makes the best decisions.

Building for the future

The partner channel continued to grow, supporting a wide range of B2B providers and referral partners across the UK. The team expanded further, CanDo was shortlisted for the North West Family Business Awards in the Business Services category and, sadly, still hasn't won one yet. Still family-run. Still answering the phone. Still doing things properly.

Our Commitment

Better business, not just bigger business

We're proud supporters of the Better Business Act — a campaign to change UK law so that every company is required to balance profit with a positive impact on people and the planet. It's not just about what we sell. It's about how we operate.

For CanDo Payments, this means transparent pricing that doesn't exploit small businesses, real support from real people, planting trees through Ecologi, and becoming a Certified B Corporation™. We believe the businesses of the future are the ones that do well and do good.
